Dryden Soccer Club Minutes
July 10, 2003
Attendees: Mike Allmendinger, Robin Gleed, Doug Hoyt, Evan Kurtz, Bill Turner, Tim Wiese, Peggy Westerling
Minutes of May 12, 2003 Meeting
Approved as submitted.
The meeting of June 9 was unofficial due to the lack of a quorum.
Coordinators Reports
Adult Program - Bill Turner reported that enough women had signed up for the Coed team to complete the roster. Although some of the players are beginners, the Adult group is appropriately providing an entry point for new players. The team is laying in the lower (recreational) division of the Ithaca League. Turnout for the pickup games is adequate, but we could accommodate more players, and if anyone is interested, they should join us Wednesdays at 5:30 and Sundays at noon on the JV field.
Registrar - Peggy Westerling reported that the new forms are out. There is some confusion between the Travel team and Rec forms, even though everyone reviewing them had thought that the forms were clear. The Fall deadline is 7/13. Most forms for Fall will come in through the coaches.
Referees and Coaching - Tim Wiese reported that a coaching clinic is planned for October, with Janine Bennett and Laszlo Engel as instructors. The District has been asked to provide referees for one field at the ODP tournament. Bill Campbell has sent an inquiry to the referees.
Treasurer - Doug Hoyt provided a treasury report. The total ending balance as of July 9 was $5,664.83.
Facilities - Peggy reported that for the schools, Tina Hollenbeck has just passed the torch back to Ralph. We have no information from him yet. Peggy has submitted building use requests.
New Business
Fields - Mike Allmendinger reported that the fields had been lined, but the mowing was marginal, and the fields are in bad condition, especially around the goals. There was some discussion of this. Peggy, Tim and Mike will meet with Ralph and the grounds head to discuss what the DSC can do to help with the fields.
Elections - The elections were scheduled for June, but not held because of lack of quorum. The slate of candidates was elected by acclamation:
President: Tim Wiese
Vice President: Robin Gleed
Treasurer: Doug Hoyt
Secretary: Bill Turner
Registrar: Peggy Westerling
Facilities Coordinator: Peggy Westerling
Sr/Intermediate Coordinator: Anne Landon (Even Kurtz will phase in)
Recruitment - Mike Allmendinger raised the issue of how to help Winter (indoor) teams become Spring (outdoor) teams. Changes are underway so that younger teams are less competitive and not such a huge time commitment, either for players or for coaches. There was some discussion. For the coaches, some of the changes are simply cyclic - as their kids age, the parents advance through the age groups, too, and then move on when the kids “graduate”. The coaching clinics are intended to help new parents get involved. Peggy expressed concern that the letter that was sent out did not improve the turnout at tonight’s meeting. It was felt that the Town Rec coordinator will help with advertising and promoting the Rec program.
Tompkins County Soccer Association - A meeting took place with the Tompkins County clubs on Wednesday, July 9 to discuss the formation of a Tompkins County Soccer Association. The exact goals are to be determined, but in general the goals discussed were:
Year 1: Formation. Write a constitution, meet 2-3x, take over the operation of the TCFYSL and the Field leagues, create a Web site with links to the different clubs and programs.
Year 2: Establish a paid Director of Coaching position, establish criteria for forming Premier teams.
Year 3: Blend in travel teams from the different clubs? Help with the club teams that are trying to fill in players to reach adequate roster numbers?
Needed: a Travel Team coordinator who can start attending BCSA meetings regularly! But we also need BCSA to do a good job of notifying us of meeting dates, especially of late changes!
Improved email responses from officers - Tim had sent out email lately and had not been getting responses. Bill apologized for being one of the worst offenders.
Next meeting: Monday, October 13, 7:00 PM at the Elementary School
